Getting a puppy or kitten is SO exciting & fun! There’s a number of vaccines, treatments, diagnostic test, training, socialization and care that they will need. We’re here to not only determine the most appropriate veterinary treatments & products for your pet, but help answer your questions & get you off to a good start with the training & socialization that helps keep your pet at their best. We also enjoy sneaking in plenty of belly rubs, treats, play & snuggles to keep them relaxed & happy to be here.
Your puppy or kitten’s first visit to our clinic should be at ~8 weeks old. At this visit we’ll determine what vaccinations are necessary, provide you a complimentary exam, free puppy/kitten kit which includes your first dose of heartworm/internal parasite preventative and flea/tick medication for free. On the first visit you’ll need to bring in a fresh stool sample and vaccine or medical records from where you got your pet.
Most dogs will receive a Da2P (Distemper-Adenovirus-Parvo combo), Bordetella, Leptospirosis, and Rabies vaccines. The veterinarian will discuss which vaccines are appropriate for your pet & the booster schedule they will need (vaccines are typically given every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks of age). We also evaluate a fecal sample for parasites, red or white blood cells, & other criteria. Unfortunately internal parasites are extremely common in our pets.
For kittens, we would do a feline leukemia/FIV test & vaccines initially around 8 weeks old. Then we booster vaccinations every 3-4 weeks until age 16 weeks. Typical vaccinations are FVRCP (Rhinotracheitis-Calicivirus-Panleukopenia), Leukemia, and Rabies. We also recommend heartworm/internal parasite & flea/tick prevention like topical Revolution. Even indoor cats are frequently diagnosed with internal parasites & can be infected with heartworms.
Besides healthcare for your pet, SOCIALIZING is very important. For cats this includes providing toys, scratching posts, enrichment, play time, and setting boundaries. For dogs, we recommend a basic obedience class to learn manners outside the home and to socialize with other pets & people.
We also offer free “happy visits” for puppies & kittens. This a time to help shy or timid pets overcome their fears. This is a fun only visit! Just play, treats & relaxation while you visit with our staff.
